The path to computer-aided design (CAD) is a complex one. It’s a path that AutoCAD took, and it’s a path that other CAD products have taken and may continue to take. AutoCAD came from a company named Unify, which was founded in 1980 in California and was dedicated to a single project. That project was CAD on the personal computer. It was an obvious and easy leap to get from Unify’s work on CAD on the personal computer to AutoCAD for the desktop.
AutoCAD was the first commercial program to create its own files. It was an idea that would become common to many commercial CAD programs. These days, most commercial CAD programs use some sort of native file format. However, most of these programs use a standard file format. AutoCAD created a native file format.
AutoCAD was also the first commercial program to become hugely popular. The problem is, other commercial programs, including programs from Autodesk Inc., have tried to copy AutoCAD’s success, with varying degrees of success.
