First let’s talk about the game before we get into how much I’m enjoying this game. I was really tempted to try the Xbox One X version because I have a solid computer, but that would have been an unnecessary expense. Instead, I went with the Nintendo Switch edition, and the difference in resolution and texture fidelity alone is noticeable in small places. It also features a locked frame rate, so the Switch version runs at 60 frames per second, and the X version runs at 30.
In most cases, I would say the Switch version is the way to go, but not with Tarnished Arena. The resolution difference means that playing Tarnished Arena on the Switch for long stretches of time would make the game look terribly foggy, with characters missing and strings of text getting cut off. I highly recommend playing it on the Xbox One X instead.
The Switch’s unique features also extend to its gameplay. Due to the Switch’s unique form factor, the game is meant to be played with two players. There’s no direct online multiplayer for this game, which means you need to be connected to a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to play with other players. However, each player has their own world and inventory, so you don’t need to worry about messing up your friend’s game – it’s a great feature.
